Search Console's generative AI report is live. Open it this week.

On 31 August 2026 Google finished rolling its generative AI performance report out to every Search Console account in the world. For the first time you can see, free and in two minutes, how often AI Overviews and AI Mode put your pages in front of people. Here is where it is, what the numbers mean, and what we are doing about it this month.

What Google shipped on 31 August 2026, and where to find it

Google announced its generative AI performance report on the Search Central blog in June 2026 and, as Search Engine Journal reported, completed the rollout to every website worldwide on 31 August 2026.

Where it lives: Search Console, Performance, then the generative AI report under Search. It covers AI Overviews and AI Mode, plus generative AI features in Discover.

Google's help page adds one line worth knowing before you read a number out loud: the report "includes data from the Web search type in the Performance report (Search results)". It is drawn from your existing Search numbers, not extra traffic on top.

The same rollout brought a Search generative AI control, a toggle for whether your site appears in those features at all. Search Engine Journal reports that sites that opt out do not get any traffic or impressions from these features, and Search Engine Land reports that Google says the choice is not used as a ranking signal for search results outside them. For almost every local business, opting out is the wrong move.

Until it arrived, Search Console gave no separate figure for how often Google's AI showed your pages. Now anyone with a verified property can see it in two minutes.

Why does an impressions-only report matter?

Because it is the first official count of how often Google's AI shows your site. And it shows it a lot. Ofcom's Online Nation 2025 report, published on 10 December 2025, found that roughly 30% of Google keyword searches in the UK now deliver an AI-generated summary, and 53% of UK adults say they see them often. Ofcom also says AI answers are reducing traffic to websites, and expects them to become an increasingly important component of search.

The click data is US only, so treat it as direction of travel. SparkToro's analysis of Similarweb clickstream data found 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click between January and April 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024, and that an AI Overview cuts click-through by nearly 60%. AI Mode was just 0.34% of US searches, so the Overview, not the chat tab, is where the clicks go missing.

Our own GA4 gives the other half. Across the 12 sites we own or look after, AI assistants sent 274 sessions in the 30 days to 8 September 2026, 1.5% of all visits. Month on month, the share went from 0.29% in June 2025 to 1.29% in August 2026. Small, growing fast, and invisible to Google's report.

How does Google decide which pages its AI shows?

AI Mode, which reached the UK in July 2025, uses what Google calls query fan-out: your question is split into many sub-queries and the answers stitched back together. Whitespark's guide says it grounds local answers on Google Business Profiles, Maps, reviews and website content, and that answers vary from user to user.

AI Overviews depend on the question, and studies disagree on how often a local search gets one. Whitespark's Q1 2025 study found an AI Overview on 68% of local searches. A May 2025 study of 540 queries across three US cities, published by aivisible.co.uk, found near-me searches showed an AI Overview about 15% of the time and a local pack 93%, while informational queries got one about 92%. The 540-query sample is US and needs UK replication, and Whitespark does not give a country, but the steer survives the disagreement: near-me searches still mostly show a map, so your question pages are where AI impressions will land. The same page puts Google Business Profile signals at about 32% of local ranking weight and reviews at about 20%.

Size is not the barrier owners assume. Adido Digital reported that 34.5% of AI Overview citations came from sites with a Domain Authority below 40. Small sites that are complete, consistent everywhere and answer in the first line qualify for both the map and the answer.

How do I read the generative AI report for a local business?

Three comparisons, ten minutes, once a month. How we plan to read it, not a rulebook.

  1. AI impressions against classic impressions, page by page. A page with many AI impressions is being used as an answer. One whose AI impressions rise while classic clicks fall is probably being read inside the Overview rather than visited, and that is the page to fix first with a sharper first sentence, a price or a book-now button. The AI report draws on the same Web search data, so treat this as a ratio between two views, not a share of one.
  2. Which pages appear. Question pages should lead and the homepage trail. A town page in the list is a fair sign you count as a local answer.
  3. Device and country. AI impressions from outside the UK usually mean a generic question, not a customer.

Read it beside your Business Profile insights too, because the journey is moving to the map. On 31 August 2026 Search Engine Land published an analysis of US profiles showing Q2 2026 calls down 11.9% and website clicks down 12.5% year on year, with direction requests up 21.1%. Its smaller UK dataset had direction requests and website clicks rising. The takeaway: a report that still leads with call volume is measuring only part of the journey. What this means for a UK barber, plumber, tour operator, energy assessor or holiday let

A caveat: none of these figures come from the new report. We are opening it for every site we look after and will publish what we find.

  • Barbers. "Barbers Tunbridge Wells" is a map search, and The P2 Collective is top 4 for it. Expect your AI impressions on the questions instead, like how long a skin fade takes. No page answering those, nothing for the Overview to quote.
  • Plumbers. "Emergency plumber" goes to the map. "Why is my boiler losing pressure" goes to an Overview: in the US sample above, near-me searches showed one about 15% of the time against about 92% for informational questions. Two pages, two jobs.
  • Tour operators. Research-heavy, so expect the highest AI impressions of any trade here. London Brewery Tour took 2,208 organic clicks in August 2026 and is page 1 for "Bermondsey Beer Mile". Its guides are where the AI report should light up; the booking pages are where the clicks still come from.
  • Energy assessors. EPC Near Me is page 1 nationally for "EPC near me". Watch whether AI impressions gather on the town pages while clicks stay on the search page.
  • Holiday lets. Field Cottage Peterstow has 220,000 impressions in 16 months for one cottage and is top 4 for "National Trust near Ross-on-Wye". We expect its guides to lead its AI report, and will say next month whether they did.

What we're doing about it for our clients

Same local SEO, new gauge. Established work first, then what we are adding this month:

  1. Google Business Profile first. Complete, active, consistent, reviews encouraged and answered.
  2. Fast static sites that answer in the first line, with FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and business schema from day one. London Brewery Tour has published daily, AI-assisted and human-edited, since May 2025 and is page 1 for "Bermondsey Beer Mile".
  3. AI referrals in every monthly report, with GA4 AI-assistant sessions beside the Search Console numbers. ChatGPT sent 87% of them in the 90 days to 8 September 2026, and how it picks a local business is its own post.
  4. Opening the new report for every client, and comparing AI impressions with classic impressions page by page.
  5. This month we are matching the listings. Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp and Foursquare to the Google Business Profile, so name, address, phone, hours and categories are identical everywhere.
  6. This month we are adding FAQ blocks to existing service pages, with FAQPage schema, answering the exact questions owners hear on the phone.
  7. This month we are starting a monthly prompt log. Fixed prompts of the "recommend me a barber in Tunbridge Wells" kind, run in ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok for each local client, logging who gets named. Grok has sent our sites one visit in 15 months, and we are watching.

What you should do this week

  1. Open the report and save a baseline. Note total AI impressions and your top five pages, and screenshot it. No Search Console? Verify your site first: no verified property, no report.
  2. Compare with the classic report for the same dates. Any page with high AI impressions and falling clicks needs a clearer first sentence, a price or a "book now", not a rewrite.
  3. Fix the profile before the website. Hours, categories, phone, photos, then reply to every review from the last 90 days. Profile signals and reviews together are about half the local ranking weight in the aivisible.co.uk estimates above.
  4. Add five questions to your main service page. The ones you answer on the phone: price, area covered, how long it takes. First sentence answers, then the detail. FAQPage schema if your site can add it.
  5. Check GA4 for AI visitors. Filter session source for chatgpt.com, chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com, claude.ai and grok.com. Ignore 1 September 2026: a GA4 processing bug reportedly showed zero traffic for many accounts that day.
  6. Do not rebuild anything in a panic. Near-me searches still mostly go to the map. Fix the profile, add the questions, wait for next month's numbers.

Common objections, answered

"It only shows impressions, so it is useless." It shows the one thing owners could not see before: whether Google's AI shows you at all. And aivisible.co.uk reports that 88% of consumers still fact-check an AI recommendation against reviews. Whoever sees you in an Overview and then searches your name shows up in your brand clicks, not your AI report.

"My customers are over 60. They don't use AI." Ofcom's Adults' Media Use and Attitudes tracker, fieldwork September to November 2025, as summarised by Arfadia, shows 54% of UK adults now use AI tools, up from 31% in 2024. That is 18% of those aged 65 and over, and 79% of 16 to 24 year olds. Your customers may not. The people searching on their behalf probably do, and an Overview appears whether or not anyone calls it "using AI".

"I'll wait until Google adds clicks and queries." It does not show them today. Do the work anyway: what earns AI impressions is what wins the local pack, so there is no separate AI job to postpone.

The verdict

For the first time, Google is telling every business owner how often its AI puts their pages in front of people. Impressions only, and drawn from your existing Search numbers rather than added on top. But it is official, free, already in your account, and the most honest number you have for the roughly 30% of UK Google searches that now show an AI summary. This is not the end of local search. It is one more report to read every month, and the owners who read it first will act first.

Open it this week, save the number, work down the list above. For the next post, follow the blog or get it on WhatsApp.

Questions, answered

Where is the generative AI report in Google Search Console?

It sits under Performance: open Search Console, choose your property, click Performance and select the generative AI report for Search. Google calls it the generative AI performance report. It shows impressions from AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Discover, by page, country, device and date. The worldwide rollout completed on 31 August 2026, so every verified property has it.

Does the Search Console AI report show clicks from AI Overviews?

No. It shows impressions only: no clicks, no click-through rate and no queries, and Google's help page says so. The same page says the report draws on the same Web search data as the classic Search results report, so treat the new view as a slice of it rather than extra traffic. To see whether AI is sending you visitors, filter GA4 session source for chatgpt.com, chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com, claude.ai and grok.com.

How many UK Google searches show an AI Overview?

Roughly 30% of Google keyword searches in the UK now deliver an AI-generated summary, according to Ofcom's Online Nation 2025 report published on 10 December 2025, and 53% of UK adults say they see them often. US click data from SparkToro shows the effect on traffic: 68.01% of US searches ended without a click between January and April 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024.

Do AI Overviews appear on near me searches?

Less often than on questions, though the studies disagree. A May 2025 sample of 540 US queries published by aivisible.co.uk found near-me searches showed an AI Overview about 15% of the time and a local pack 93%, while informational questions triggered one about 92%. Whitespark's Q1 2025 study, which does not give a country, found an Overview on 68% of local searches. Either way, near-me searches still mostly show a map, so your question pages are where AI impressions will land.

How do I get my business shown in Google's AI Overviews?

There is no switch, and nobody can guarantee it. AI Mode grounds local answers on Google Business Profiles, Maps, reviews and website content, so the work is the same as winning the local pack. Keep the profile complete and active, answer your reviews, and make each page answer the customer's exact question in its first sentence, with FAQPage schema where you can. Small sites qualify: Adido Digital reported this month that 34.5% of AI Overview citations came from sites with a Domain Authority below 40.

Can I stop my site appearing in Google's AI Overviews?

Yes, through the Search generative AI control that shipped with the same rollout, but think hard first. Search Engine Journal reports that sites which opt out get no traffic or impressions from those features, and that Google says the setting is not used as a ranking signal elsewhere in Search. For a local business that wants to be recommended, switching yourself off is the wrong move. Fix the profile and the pages instead.
